Garret winced with each bump of the wagon as it rolled along the rough road toward New Prospects. Still, it felt good to be going somewhere. Two weeks of inactivity had nearly driven him crazy. Lying in bed left a man’s mind free to explore too many thoughts he’d just as soon avoid.

Speakin’ of which, he mused as the schoolhouse came into view. And beyond it, the cabin. Her cabin.

Beth was never far from his thoughts. Every day he’d remembered how pretty she’d looked in her elegant riding habit when she’d paid him her one and only visit. And then he’d reminded himself he couldn’t provide anything as costly as that outfit if he saved up for a whole year. A woman who was used to such finery grew quickly dissatisfied when forced to do without. He’d learned that lesson the hard way.

“Flick’s not there,” Janie said, intruding on his thoughts. “Miss Beth must’ve already left for church.”

“Guess so.”

She sighed. “I was hopin’ she could ride in with us.”

“Don’t you get enough, seein’ her at school every day?”

Janie’s eyes widened as she looked at him. “I couldn’t ever get tired of bein’ with her, Pa. She’s easy t’talk to.”

Wasn’t he easy to talk to? Garret wanted to ask, suddenly out of sorts. Wasn’t it bad enough he couldn’t get Beth out of his head without her stealing his daughter’s affections to boot?

He swallowed hard. What was he getting so worked up over? Janie didn’t need anybody but him. Even when Muriel had been alive, it had been Garret the child went to for love and attention. Nothing had changed. Look how she’d fussed over him during his recovery.

He had a sudden image of Beth seated at his bedside, running her fingers over his brow, and felt a strong and unexpected yearning to feel the tender care of a woman.

No, not any woman.
